webassets/reporting_map.JPGAn example of helpful information in this book:

Did you know that over half of the states in the U.S. have laws requiring hospitals to report their infection rates to the public?  This means that you have access to the number of patients who acquire infections at any hospital, and you can find out what types of infections those patients had.

Infections are preventable if good practices are followed, and some hospitals are better at it than others. Use this information to choose a hospital in your area where you or your loved one are less likely be infected by unsafe practices.  Don't wait until a health emergency; know your options now for safer care, before you're under pressure to make a hasty decision during an unexpected crisis. Dr. McGuckin tells you how to use this information to your advantage, and provides you with the right questions to ask your doctor before committing to a hospital stay.

Map from Consumers Union - Stop Hospital Infections program.  Many laws were enacted in the late 2000's and are just now implementing their data collection and reporting schemes. Green states have public reporting laws. Blue states have laws and also have begun releasing reports to the public.  Red states voluntarily report infection rates either to the public or confidentially to healthcare authorities.
